Comcast Cable Sucks!

October 30th 2007 18:51
I have a few issues with Comcast, not the least of which is my feeling that they are overpriced. Still, their actions this week sealed my decision. First, they admitted to interfering with the internet usage of customers. Apparently, Comcast is concerned that peer-to-peer usage is taking too much of their bandwith. The same bandwith that they feel compelled to charge quite abit for, naturally. Some say the type of traffic they are blocking is primarily used for pirating songs and the like. The trouble is, peer-to-peer has many legitimate uses too. And they have no way of knowing which is which. What Comcast was caught doing is essentially impersonating users and initiating a shutdown of the upload/download.

MSNBC reported on October 19th that the action used to interrupt the file sharing was akin to having a phone company interrupt a conversation between two people by having an operator come on, and in one person's voice, saying to the other "I'm sorry, I have to go now." Startling enough in and of itself. Then came the "other shoe."

Effective today in the Portland, Oregon metro area, Comcast moved MSNBC to the digital tier. Yesterday, I took the two DVRs from my household to their office and told them I wasn't interested in their "service" any longer. Wait a minute, you might ask....if I had two DVRs, wasn't I already on a digital tier? Yes I was. it's the point. Especially when looked at in context. When MSNBC is making a move to more coverage that questions the Bush Administration and when the most vocal voice against Mr. Bush and his corporate cronies is MSNBC's Kieth Olbermann. Maybe a coincidence? Sure. But why MSNBC?

On the Comcast analog lineup (basic cable) you can still find FOX, CNN, Headline News, and even CNBC. You can also watch religious programming, a couple of cartoon channels, the new network ION, some shopping channels, home channels, and yes - even the golf channel. The slot MSNBC formerly had here (Ch. 47) is now occupied by the Weather Channel. So I ask again....why MSNBC?

Now I have another decision to make. I still have Comcast for my internet and the only other choice in my area is Verizon. I have issues with them too for rolling over and giving the Bush Administration access to their customers for "national security." And remember - they did it before the 9/11 attacks, so there goes that excuse. Do I want to go with an internet provider that might impersonate me, or one that gives my info over to the Bush machine without warrant or cause?

What is again highlighted is the need for every American to support net neutrality. The internet needs to remain open to all users, regardless of how much they pay or what their political motivations might be. And the Portland area isn't the only place where they have moved MSNBC. If you are a Comcast customer, call them and ask why they did what they did, and why they are impersonating their customers on the internet.

The Staw Man and the "war on Christmas"

October 28th 2007 22:19
It's that time of year again, when we hear in America are told to be wary, for there is foul play afoot, a veritable war on that most esteemed of holidays, Christmas. It's an undeclared war, with no real fronts, no real battles, no real threat, and most assuredly, no WMD's. Still, it rears it's ugly head, spoke about vocally and frequently by Fox News pundits and others with equally valid credentials.
It would be funny if it weren't so damned irritating. Still, it can be funny....here is an article I first wrote last year, but still has bearing.

Dateline: Mid December, 2006

IT IS A DARK TIME IN THE
GALAXY.....

FREE FORCES OF THE
SECULAR-PROGRESSIVES

FIND THEMSELVES
UNDER ATTACK...

FOR BEING TOLERANT.....

"This is your secular-progressive correspondent 'Hap" Holiday reporting from the front lines of what has erroneously been deemed the War on Christmas. As you know, the secular progressive forces were viciously attacked on several fronts by the forces of the ignorant right. Caught off guard, the sec-progs were pushed back against the walls of intolerance until they were able to mount a counter attack. When the sec-progs pointed out that there was no War on Christmas and that Christmas was originally a Pagan holiday anyway, the evil forces led by the Dark Lords O'Reilly and Gibson launched a devastating attack on sec-prog tolerance and acceptance of diversity. The sec-progs saw a weakness in the front line of the Christmas Crusaders and broke through with a sharp thrust of reason. Momentarily devastated, the Armies of Ignorance were reeling. Then, against the flag of freedom and the banner of truth, the Dark Lord O'Reilly, commanding a force of screaming neo-elves, sealed the gap and surrounded the forces of tolerance. Hap Holiday, reporting."

WITH INTOLERANCE ON THE MARCH,

THE CHRISTMAS CRUSADERS FEEL EMBOLDENED...

THEY ALREADY SPEAK ABOUT EXPANDING

THEIR CULTURE WAR.....

Again, Hap Holiday. "With the sec-progs on the ropes, the Dark Lords of FOX begin to expand the war to other areas. They returned to firing on Nancy Pelosi and the forces of "San Francisco" Values. Then a unexpected move, the Jolly Red Man himself, Santa Claus, rallied his forces to assist the beleaguered sec-progs. Declaring that "the holidays are for all, and to all a good night" Mr. Claus led a reigndeer charge. The tide seems to have turned in this imaginary conflict, and progressive thought is breaking through the lines of ignorance. Hap Holiday, reporting from the front."

One thing that is part and parcel of any totalitarian movement has always been the willing suspension of the truth. As the far right in America is pushing for a country overwhelmed by their twisted ideological visions, they are more and more willing to circumnavigate logic, science, and sense. And now that their leader (the esteemed Mr. Bush) has painted them into a corner that may well cost them their shot at what they want America to be, they are acting with desperation.

No longer is there even an attempt by FOX News to make sure of their facts. Of course they haven't been able to claim to be "fair and balanced" with a straight face for years, but at least they used to at least not put out so many obviously false stories. The most recent, Bill O'Reilly throwing out another bomb aimed at "the liberal press" by claiming they didn't cover the awarding of The Medal of Honor to a soldier for duty in Afghanistan. Of course, it was thoroughly covered everywhere. That doesn't matter to the FOX viewer, though, they believe what they are told to believe.

It's not by accident, this bending of reality to meet the expectations of the person getting the "news." Be it on radio, television, or in the sanctuaries of fundamentalist churches, the expectation is the news. They want to be told that liberals, gays, scientists and all of Islam is out to get them. Then they can "circle the wagons" to defend God and Country.

That's been at the heart of the success of the far right. Redefining "truth." If you can demonize your enemy, then you turn your enemy into a Godless heathen worthy of not only liberty and the pursuit of hapiness....but of life itself. That bending of anything real into something patently false is the goal of any propaganda program. And it is a required element for a corporate-fascist state.

The policies brought about by the lie-policy have struck at the heart of the American Middle Class, much to the detriment of most of those who make up the rank-and-file far right. They are told their problems are the fault of immigrants, liberals, atheists, Islam, secular-humanists, nothing but the true sources.

This gives a feeling of empowerment to the relatively powerless, and they in turn enable the powerful to gain even more. The obscene corporate and CEO profits, the making of war for profit and political gain, the attacks on American civil liberties - none could be possible without the enabling coming from the fundamentalist right. Never mind that they are being hurt by the policies too. Remember, what is real isn't important as what is said.

That's why the people who make up the fundamentalist right by and large believe George Bush is doing a good job, there were WMD's found in Iraq, Iraq was involved in the 9/11 attacks, and so on. Beyond politics, the group denies science too. For if science is correct, dogma must be wrong. So global warming becomes a liberal fantasy. Health care, in many cases for their own children, becomes a communist attack. And the big one, evolution...cannot even be considered. Theres a popular bumper sticker for the group..."God said it, I believe it, that settles it." In their minds, a spokesperson for God has the same authority, so you could say "Bush said it" or "Hannity said it" and have virtually the same effect.

What is important to note is just how dangerous this is. The rest of us who are smart enough to sift through information to see what is real, to try to check facts, to have a questioning mind. Those who look at this amusingly, like it doesn't affect them, don't get it. The very future of America and the world may well depend on stopping the American fundamentalist movement.

On fear and hate mongering

October 19th 2007 04:12

I just got the following in an email today. It's not a new story, and I even doubt if it is true. Still, it is the stuff of folklore among the fundamentalist right in America. I am on an email list that routinely sends out stuff like this..

President Bush again stonewalls press

October 17th 2007 16:18
The Chimp in Chief holds a news coference where there is nothing new, nothing to report, no questions answered, and continued stonewalling of reporters. Why did he hold a news conference? To apply pressure on Republicans in Congress ahead of the veto override vote coming up on Thursday, and to through a little of his swagger around. That was the headline he wanted, that Congress isn't sending him bills that he can sign. He is trying to stay relevant while also firing up the base.

How anyone can look at him at not gag is beyond me. As the time went on, he kept getting some real questions and he kept dodging them, a different headline might have emerged. Along the lines of firing up the base, he threw out WWIII talk around Iran and possible tensions with North Korea and Russia. Tensions almost entirely created by Mr. Bush, by the way. And he again refused to speak at all about Israel striking Syria. All of this is code for the evangelical base who thrills at the possibility of an apocalypse. Around a third of Americans imagines that they are living in the "end times" and will see the return of Christ - and the joyful genocide they expect to accompany him - during their lifetimes. When an end-times Dominionist talks they are often ignored. This one (Mr. Bush) needs to be listened to, as he has quite abit of military power at his disposal

Al Gore versus George Bush

October 13th 2007 02:46
President George W. Bush has shown himself to be arguably the worst president in the history of these great United States. He has started a war of aggression that has turned into a quagmire, he has ruined the budget surplus left him while running up astronomic deficits, he has dragged through the image of America through the mud on a scale never before seen. He has pushed to a new fascism through an unholy alliance of religious fundamentalism and crass corporatism. When all is said and done, history will remember him as an incompetent, lazy, and uncaring criminal. The only thing he can hope to win is a pardon, should a Republican win the White House in '08.

Now let's take a look at Al Gore. Former Vice President (and President Elect, once the votes were counted right) Al Gore has become a world leader when it comes to one of the most important issues to face us, global climate change. He has taken a hard look at what's going on, and sought out the science. He has presented us with what every reputable scientist will back up, that the climate of the planet is changing rapidly, and that it is our fault. But beyond that, he points out solutions and forces those of us who think to decide. Will we do something now, or will we do nothing, and pass a world in turmoil to those who will follow us

It has been a frustrating few months for real progressives. The 2006 election gave many of us hope for an end to the Iraq debacle, real investigations into the myriad crimes and excesses of the Bush Administration, and even impeachment to remove the criminals at the top. Needless to say, progress has been slow at best. The lack of quick action puts the progressive in a bit of a quandary. What do we do?

Yes, impeachment seems a far off dream and the Iraq debacle looks like it will continue unabated. Still, there has been progress. Without the voters changing Congress in 2006, we wouldn’t know about the scandal surrounding fired attorneys, and Alberto Gonzales would still be Attorney General. Karl Rove may not have slid his slimy ass out of the White House. Bush would have probably felt confident enough to have already launched his lusted for attack on Iran. Granted, with all that is stinking up Washington, the progress made doesn’t seem like much. Still, it is better than the alternative. Which is the crux of the quandary faced by progressives

Blackwater in Iraq

October 7th 2007 21:44
The very public and very outrageous shootings in Baghdad on September 16th by members of the mercenary organization Blackwater were but the latest in a long history of abuses and criminality by members of the group. Blackwater, for those who don't know, is an American corporation dedicated to winning contracts in war zones or disaster areas. The company is most infamous for its involvement in New Orleans after the Katrina disaster and Iraq as part of the continuing disaster wrought by the policies of the Bush Administration. The group is headed by an American Christian fundamentalist with very close ties to the White House. It is headquartered in North Carolina.

Because of those "close ties," the group was allowed to return to business as usual in Iraq only four days after the civilian killings of September 16th, even after the Iraqi government had called the conduct "criminal" and promised responsible Blackwater operatives would be prosecuted and the company would no longer be able to operate in Iraq. Guess the quick change of policy shows who really is in charge in Iraq, huh? No wonder it's a debacle

Christianity is under counter-attack

October 5th 2007 06:32
I just read another post bemoaning the perceived "attacks" upon Christianity that the poor faithful must endure day in and day out. I, for one, am attacking Christianity. There, you have my confession. But alas, it is a counter-attack. For myself, and for the countless millions who have died to support the mythology of the Christian god. Don't get me wrong, I don't' believe in any other god either. But it is the Christian incarnation that most draws my ire, because I see them as the most hypocritical, the most usurious, and the most dangerous, in the long run.

The fundamentalist Christian longs for genocide, prays for it. Don't' believe me? Read some excerpts from the "Left Behind" series of books. The books revel in the destruction of non-Christians. Hell, they even made a video game version where the good Christies get to blow the hell out of infidels

The absolute worst president in American history once again proved why he earns that title on a near daily basis. With very little in the way of fanfare, the president did what he promised, giving a veto to the bill that would expand medical coverage for children. Showing his true colors again (disdain for the American people who aren't rich) he gave a big screw you to those who actually make the country run. And once again, Mr. Bush has even gone against some in his own party to veto a bill that offends the core of his base. Many members of Congress up for re-election are going to have to answer for sticking by the president if the veto holds. There are enough yes votes in the Senate to override, but not in the House.

The majority of Americans are behind the bill to extend children's' health care, even in the "red" states. People everywhere are realizing that it is part and parcel of a civilized country to support the health of its citizens, most especially the children. The American health care system is spiraling downward into an abyss of higher costs and lesser care while the president and his party seem content to fiddle. Swaggering out of the White House with his stupid look of victory that he shows when he thinks he has won something, the president might as well have raised his middle finger to the Middle Class

America and Socialism

October 2nd 2007 00:10
We all know the headlines. Social Security is in danger of becoming bankrupt. The super rich are getting richer faster than ever before. The number of people in America living below the poverty line is growing. Health care costs are out of control. Energy prices are spiraling upward. Wage growth is stagnating. Interest rates are on the rise. We are in a war that is more about empire building than it is about "bringing democracy."

What are the differences
