Secular Humanity - May 2009

Just what is an "activist judge" anyway? Is it just an arbitrary phrase thrown out to the public forum? Perhaps the term might be applied to judges and courts who overturn the 'will of the people?" If that's the test, the most activist judges on the Supreme Court are Scalia, Thomas, and Kennedy - each of them have voted more than 50 percent of the time to overturn laws either passed by Congress or voted in by the people, when such cases have been brought before them. No so-called "liberal" judge on the court hits that mark.

And which judges, if one were to guess, have been more likely to vote in favor of corporate interests and big money elites? Now we look to the first of hopefully many Supreme Court nominees to come out of the Obama years and he, by all but the most partisan observers, has made an excellent choice. Of course, the hard right will mobilize for a battle, and they will say they want nominees who aren't "activist judges."

As it turns out, every time a non-hard right judge gets nominated, the right cries about "activist judges." In truth, they mean any judge that doesn't follow their narrow ideology. Sonia Sotomayor is an extremely qualified candidate, and is in fact more a centrist than a lefty. Still, look for the right to attack and attack again. What, you expected something else? They have shifted the definition of center so far to the right that anyone but a staunch rightie will do for them.

Once the dust settles a few Republicans in the Senate will likely vote for her. Most probably won't. All of them might find themselves between the proverbial rock and hard place. If they fight too hard they will further expose their party as obstructionist and wandering. They will drive one more nail into the conservative coffin as it were.

If they don't fight, the nutcase base, fired up already by Hannity and Limbaugh and Parshall and Levin and Savage and Robertson and Huckabee (look for Palin to chime in too) will be extremely miffed. The far right sees the world through some very, very, narrow prisms and anything outside of their view is immediately suspect. Senators with a R by their names will have to struggle with which side of that fence they want to come down on. If they do anger their base, they may find themselves in the same boat as Arlen Specter.

What the upcoming fight may prove to people who haven't figured it out already that the conservative movement in America over the past four decades or so has done nothing good for America. The leadership might be even more exposed as advocates for corporate elitism and religious self-righteousness.

Judge Sonia Sotomayor will prove to be an excellent addition to the Supreme Court. And with some luck and good fortune, Scalia and Thomas will follow David Souter into a life away from the courts.

The concept of "Released Time" is something school districts around the country have to grapple with. It's becoming a tool for Christians to re-introduce religion back into school, albeit through off-campus "classes."

In the Portland, Oregon school district, the proselytizing occurs under the umbrella of a group called PREP4kids, at www.prep4kids.org . On the homepage of their website they have the biblical quote "We will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, His power and the wonders he has done." Psalms 78:4.

While Released Time has been around for awhile, it seems to be drawing new emphasis as proselytizers see it as a way to grow their church populations by using students to get to families who the group describes as the "unchurched." What's wrong with that?

First, it takes students out of class, making the teacher either have to adapt the curriculum to the absence or for the student to have to make up. Of course, that's not as hard to overcome as the disruption to the flow of learning is from the teacher and student standpoint. Especially when the time spent in Released Time is, as often occurs, used to encourage students to go back and proselytize.

A site reached through links from the Portland site, www.schoolministries.org , shows just how insidious the mission really is, if you read through the mission statements and belief pages. what is clearly stated is that Released Time is meant to be a back door into public schools. There is no difference between what goes on at Released Time and a regular church on a Sunday morning. The mere fact of a small separation of distance from the school doesn't negate the effect. And that site reports that in South Carolina Released Time can be used to get actual high school credits! Anyone else see something wrong with that?

Churches have meetings on their holy day as well as throughout the week. Children and families in any community have the chance to go to whatever meetings they like. There is no need to disrupt the school day. I wonder what my boss would think if I asked for Released Time from work. There is a time and a place, in other words.

Released Time has been challenged and upheld by the Supreme Court, as long as nothing takes place on school grounds. It's time for legislatures to look at codifying some clarification, especially in light of the constraints being placed on school districts because of budget woes. Can any school afford to allow weekly absences?

As an Atheist I see Released Time in the same way I see a virus, trying to infiltrate wherever it can by whatever means it can. I understand not everyone will see it that way, they might even think of Released Time as purely innocent. But any citizen should be concerned. We as a nation are supposed to be committed to a separation of church and state and the concept of providing a good and equal education.

The true test of Release Time and it's proponents would be if other groups started using it. Right now it's a Christian evangelical movement. What if Islamic clerics started using it as a tool? Or Wiccans? Or, what if I, as an Atheist, started an off-campus instruction class that talked about the evils of religion? Let that happen and see how committed they are to the idea of openness.

After all, the Portland site has the quote "We believe in the resurrection of both the saved and the lost; those who are saved unto the resurrection of life, and those who are lost unto the resurrection of damnation." So I should be equally allowed to bring students out of class to learn how they can join me in my damnation, right?

It was no secret that George Bush thought that God had directed him to be president, and to wage war in the name of God. Now it comes out that not only was Mr. Bush's mindset such, but that it was encouraged and manipulated by Rumsfeld and probably Dick Cheney too.

When the news came out last week in a report in GQ Magazine that Rumsfeld often delivered the memos to President Bush himself, it raised some alarms, but not nearly as much as it should. What the memos amounted to was nothing less than trying to make the waging of war in Iraq come off as a Christ sanctioned Crusade. At that point the differences between going to war as a Christian Crusade or an Islamic Jihad are mere semantics.

The briefings, known as Worldwide Intelligence Updates, usually centered on war action from the day before and were seen by very few people until GQ broke the story. Now the pictures are widely available. Go to the page Really Long Link to view a slideshow of the briefing pages.

You will find quotes from the bible like "Open the gates that the righteous nation may enter, the nation that keeps the faith," from the book of Isaiah. It appears over a photo showing an American tank rolling under the crossed swords over a road in Baghdad.

Several show soldiers praying, with religious cheer leading in the form of biblical quotes above, including "Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and your plans will succeed."

There are a few that focus on the fall of Baghdad, with in-your-face and gloating quotes like a rather rambling tome taken from the book of Daniel that talks about God numbering the days of a kingdom and then dividing it.

They all play to theater, some more obvious than others. A bit from Joshua says "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go." The quote appears over a highway sign with an arrow showing the direction to Baghdad. Funny, I thought troops were supposed to be under the command of generals and the president, not the "LORD."
I think it's important to consider how such overt reference to religious warfare looks not only to our enemies, but to our allies. Even more, it's important to think about what it says to us about us. Are we, as a nation, going to be mired in the old thought of religion versus religion? Or will we finally move from the simplicity of religious adolescence as a society into the maturity of secular leadership?

I'd pay to see that!

Sean Hannity getting water boarded! If anyone doesn't know, Sean Hannity said on his show on FOX News that he would be water boarded for charity. To give context, he was being out-smarted by a guest who was clearly making the case that water boarding is torture. Hannity, being the right wing tool he is, didn't seem to think water boarding was so bad. Hannity the Manatee told his guest he would be water boarded for charity.

The very next day Keith Olbermann offered Hannity 1000 dollars a second to charity if Hannity would agree to be waterboarded. Of course, Hannity hasn't responded. It's funny, those who usually are the most full of bravado around issues like torture are the most full of shit when actually confronted

If aliens were to hear about Christianity it might so happen they could think of it as a faith which talks about love, peace, understanding - you know, if they only read the good excerpts from the bible. And if they skipped the parts about genocide, hate, slavery, misogyny - yea, most of the book. So that's a stretch. Still, if one looks at the words of Jesus and removes them from the rest of the book he comes across as a revolutionary, a man who speaks of justice and love - not a torturer.

You wouldn't know that from his followers, though. Turns out the more religious a person professes to be, the more comfortable they are with the idea of torture as a policy. I wonder how many people are surprised by that-I'm not

Stay home with the swine flu?

May 9th 2009 15:15
It's a sad commentary on the state of health care in America, there's no other way to put it. A potential pandemic knocked on the door, and the advice is to stay home if you feel ill. Sure, a good recommendation - if you can afford to, if you have an employer that won't dismiss you for missing a week with the flu.

So many Americans find themselves on the edge of a potential job loss or cutback that they aren't confident enough to take some time off if they do become sick. If they even get sick days, that is. Or maybe they get "floating" days, to be used for any purpose. One week worth of paid time off, to be used as the employee chooses. Well, as long as management agrees. Would a person choose to use them to sit at home sick

The Oregon Sesquicentennial Film Festival, put on by Marylhurst University, began on May 1st with a nice talk between Gus Van Sant and James Ivory at McMenamins Mission Theater in NW Downtown Portland.

The choice of venue was perfect, allowing a small, intimate setting with perhaps only a couple of hundred people inside. The event was a sellout, with many non-ticket holders outside trying to get in. We got lucky, I heard about the event early on a sponsor radio station, KINK FM. My wife is an amateur actor and I knew she would love it, not to mention me
