American Christo-fascism: The Family

August 31st 2009 05:03
Some of us have warned for years about the dangers coming from an unholy alliance between religious, government, and corporate interests. Seemingly disparite groups working together for their own agendas, and one big common one. What these groups have in common is a desire to involve themselves in every facet of life.

Possibly the most dangerous group has been in the news alot lately. The "Family" is a collection of politicians, business people, lobbyists, and general ne'er do wells who believe themselves to be "chosen by God" to lead the rest of us. Members of The Family regard themselves as above the morality they espouse, above the reproach they themselves so aggressively hurl at others.

It's never been as obvious as now, with so many members of The Family involved in extra-marital affairs. And not only sex has people calling foul, as it appears those involved used government funds for their trysts, and/or threw big bribes at paramours (or the ladies husbands) for quiet.

What the entire attitude points to is a self-righteous look at life and their place over common folk. Like monarchies of old that held themselves to be deities, these ultimately pathetic caricatures are far less than they imagine themselves to be. Of course, that doesn't mean they aren't dangerous.

As The Family has fallen out of the news with disgraced Nevada Senator John Ensign and the laughable Governor Mark Sanford, it is important to look at who The Family is, and just what they believe is their role in the world. Members may wish to drop back off the radar, to fade back into the shadows of corporate and political power structures. That can't be allowed to happen, the light must be put upon them.

Why is it important? In a survey of national political figures who called themselves Christian - as virtually all of them do - 1 in 3 cited The Family as an important influence. Yes, one in three. You might have heard Glenn Beck raving about communists "czars" in the Obama Administration, but have you ever heard him speak about undue Chrsitian fundamentalist influence? Of course not. The right rants about church associations such as Reverend Wright, but doesn't comment on ties that are much more web-like and much more insidious.

Is America a country where we want people who believe themselves chosen by God to lord over the rest of us as our leaders? Family members regard themselves as not subject to laws or moralities the same as the rest of us. They are very spiteful toward the poor, believing their lot in life is because they are less in the eyes of God.

They are ultra-sexist, thinking women are tools for their pleasure. They have supported ruthless dictators in countries like Somalia and Indonesia. Members of The Family are from the most alarming of political cloth, that person who sees everyone not part of their group as somehow less, and very much expendable.

We should demand our leaders be first and foremost dedicated to leading for the people, and not for their onw self-importance or enrichment. We should and must demand relgion not be injected into national policy. We have recently learned that the ultra-nationalist and paramilitary mercenary group Blackwater imagined themselves modern day Crusaders. It is imperative that we not allow our government to become an extension of a twisted theology. We must re-establish a seperation of Church and State.

To learn more about The Family I recommend the very well done expose The Family: The Secret Fundamentalism at the Heart of American Power by Jeff Sharlet.

Is Glenn Beck inciting violence?

August 29th 2009 18:21
The American conservative movement has devolved into an all fear movement, hopping from one hot-button "fear this" specter to another with a propaganda machine that would make many a fear-monger of the past blush. Fear "death panels." Fear the Marxist in the closet. Fear "government." Fear the imagined civilian "security force" being built. Fear ACORN and SEIU, Nancy Pelosi and Bernie Sanders. He sees ACORNs everywhere, and imagines Marxists in every closet. His favorite term for government advisers and department heads is "CZAR." and it's not an accident. He uses it to further fears that somehow, once again, the Commies are coming!

At the spear head of the right wing fear machine are the talk radio crowd. Too easily dismissed in the past, the real power of right wing radio is becoming more obvious. Literally tens of millions of "ditto heads" and the like tune in each and every day, sometimes for hours a day, to hear different versions of the latest talking points.

Sure, there are differences. Limbaugh is mostly a blowhard, Hannity mostly a bully-coward. And Glenn Beck is a quasi-messianic cuckoo. Still, if that was all, Beck could be dismissed and ignored, blowing in the wind to those who will listen. But there's more to it. He's pushing the envelope of sanity on those who might be dancing on a knife edge already.

What does it take for a person to move from disgruntled, angry, or disenchanted to a potential terrorist? They must feel victimized. Right wing radio has spent decades telling conservatives everything from the "liberal media" to Hollywood to the United Nations is out to get them. To take their guns, to make their kids get abortions, and yes, to give them health care.

A person must also be certain that as bad as they perceive things to be, it's getting worse, and soon. The world is closing in on them, and it's a world bent on destroying the very fiber of their lives. The person feels everything dear to them is under imminent threat. And a strict line in the sand must be drawn, separating those who would not fall in line with those who are "in the know."

Glenn Beck has told his audience that nothing is open for compromise, that nothing can be supported from Washington, that nothing but complete destruction of the president's agenda can be accepted. He often uses the sound bite from Lord of the Rings where Gandalf bellows "You shall not pass!" when he tells his minions that they cannot support anything or any compromise. "Us against them" to the extreme.

Another component is a strange combination of loneliness and community. The person thinks they are part of a select group that is under attack. That's not the extraordinary part of course, that happens in reality all of the tome in various situations. When it gets dangerous is when the particular paranoia is fed by derangement.

And finally, they need feel that God is on their side. Once the potential terrorist is convinced that they are a holy warrior, the final piece is in place. When the potential terrorist thinks their instructions are coming from God, there you go.

Where does Glenn Beck come in? He is an instigator and promoter of such a scenario. Sure, he says he doesn't want his followers to use guns, to bring violence, or to do anything but "turn the other cheek." You don't have to see him to get the wink and the nod. He sometimes seems like he is setting himself up to be the martyr of the movement, pushing the envelope until he loses enough sponsors that his show can't pay the bills. And he has gone just plain nutty.

I've listened to his radio show when I can for about two weeks now, and occasionally caught his FOX television bit. He is quite a bit more tame on television, turning down the Christian martyr stuff and trying to appear a tad more sane. The real followers listen to the radio show every day.

What do the hear? "We are on the edge of some very bad things." Obama is aiming for "the destruction of our very way of life." The "time is now." The government is "filled with Marxists." Health care is designed to "destroy America." Pushing fear while saying but "don't you be afraid." Then he will say "something bad is going to happen soon." His inference is that Obama will use an attack or disaster to seize power.

The primary undertone of what Beck does is to fuel the feelings of imminent attack and tie those feelings to being part of "God's Plan." He doesn't invoke the almighty nearly as much on television as on radio. His radio show might as well be on religious stations. He incessantly talks about how he prays for the "knowledge" he imparts to mere mortals. He infers that he has some special conduit to God, which is a mainstay to the deranged mind in most cases.

"Your defense is the belief in the power of God" Beck says, extolling followers to "stand where he wants you to stand," and to "listen to his voice." He tells them God will "save America," with Beck's help. of course. He speaks with a desperation in his voice that could lead followers to conclude the time to act is now, if they were so inclined. Once a group is sure those who oppose them politically also are enemies of God - a threshold is crossed.

Most other right wing talkers invoke God, but not with the fervor and on-the-edge flavor that Beck does. His tone, his mannerisms, his body language - all seem like something one might expect from a prophet of old. And yes, Beck does call himself a prophet.

Another trick he uses is to throw in enough reality to bring cover to the loony parts of what he says. When Beck says he believes four decades of dependency on foreign oil is a travesty, he also attacks alternative energy proposals. His favorite target is who he calls the "Green jobs Czar," Van Jones. Beck's approach is to say things need to be done, but to then promise to obstruct everything.

Regardless of how paranoid Beck may be, progressives aren't out to deny him his voice. He is going to alienate enough advertisers to in all likelihood do that himself. Nor would I try to say what Beck can and can't talk about. I will, however, continue to point out that Beck has moved from the ridiculous to the inciting. He, like Hannity and others, want something "bad" to happen. And for that their listeners should hold them accountable.

Of course there are persons who hail from the right who have legitimate questions about health care reform and what it means to them. And of course they have every right to do so, and to have their questions answered. But what we have seen on television from the boisterous on the right has nothing to do with democracy or legitimate debate.

The first clip I linked to is of a woman who had been comparing health care reform to "Hitler's T4 program" aimed at eliminating those deemed not worthy from society. The clip picks up just as she is wrapping up her question and gives Barney Frank's answer.
Really Long Link

This clip, if you can stomach it, is the oafish Sean Hannity, with backup from the "other" Wicked Witch of the North, Michele Bachmann. Notice, if you will, there is no coverage of the exchange that is really making news, in which Barney Frank calls down a "constituent" who is calling him a Nazi supporter.

It has the FOX News version of Clark Kent breathlessly covering other goings on, but no mention of the abject idiocy expressed by the woman Barney Frank compared to a dining room table. It's no wonder FOX viewers are so badly informed.
Really Long Link

Why have some on the right decided to take the express bus to crazy town anyway? We have gun toting jackasses show up at presidential events. Does anyone remember the Bush public events? You could get arrested for wearing a t-shirt! How long is it before one of them just starts shooting up the place?

We have so-called "informed citizens" protesting "government health care" while clinging tightly to their Medicare card. It's one thing to have real questions, it's quite another to be so brainwashed by talking points fed to them by sources of information so obviously tainted as to be laughable.

What does it compare to? Going to a baseball game and yelling at the umpires for pigeon poop? That doesn't work, it's not really comparable to actual crazy, as this is "stupidity based" crazy. So damn loopy you actually believe Obama is trying to off Grandma. After all, if Sean Hannity or Glenn Beck say it, it's almost as good as Jesus, right?

Come on people, If you want a debate, let's have it - but don't go into a battle of wits completely unarmed!

It began in the 70s, partly in response to the seemingly too wild ways of the counter culture in America. People who were fed up with everything from the civil rights movement to hippies coalesced into a budding movement centered around fostering fundamentalism and building a power base.

They weren't given much thought until Ronald Reagan capitalized on the movement and used it to thrust him into the White House. And of course, everyone who identifies themselves as a conservative doesn't fit the mold presented here. But the vast majority of them do

American Idiots....

August 13th 2009 22:20
When we listen to the reasons many Americans don't support current proposals for health care reform, what do we hear most often? We are going to have "death panels" that decide when and if the elderly will get life saving treatments. We will have long lines and denials of needed care. We will be paying alot more for our health care. Taxes will be going way up.

Never mind that none of those concerns are reflected in the realities of any of the proposals currently being considered. Alot of people are riled up, and they believe what they hear from their "news sources." When a deeper look is taken, a different picture emerges

American conservatives - Fact Free!

August 12th 2009 01:22
If Ignorance is bliss, why aren't conservatives a happier lot? They're mad as hell, and they aren't going to take it anymore. They will fight everything, everywhere. No to it all! Those are the marching orders given the mindless minions by their god heads.

Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck, Mark Levin, all of them cry to the heavens for "real" Americans to stand up against the tyranny of the liberal agenda. Be it ACORN or Americans wanting health care reform -anyone not with them is against them, regardless of fact or viewpoint

Atheists in America...

August 9th 2009 03:21
We all know the Geico Cavemen, don't we? Fun lovin' guys just lookin' for their place in life, tryin' to avoid being constantly reminded of how Geico commercials view them. As simpletons, unable to grasp most concepts, yet still able to deal comfortably with Geico Insurance - because it's so easy.

As an Atheist, I sometimes feel like the Geico Cavemen. Getting by in a world that views me as substandard, as not quite able to understand how the universe works. When a person dismisses the illogic and ignorance of mythical belief, they suddenly are looked upon as alien by believers of those myths

The Birthers - crazy is as....

August 9th 2009 01:36
Just in case you don't know what a "Birther" is, the short definition is "Cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs" or "A few bricks short of a load" or maybe "bat shit crazy." Sure, some might say a birther is a someone who challenges the legitimacy of President Barack Obama's birth being in America. In short, someone who so despises the idea of Barack Obama as president that they are willing to take a trip to fruitcakeville in a bid to discredit him.

Several fake birth certificates have surfaced, all of them laughable in their obvious lack of credibility. The person most out front in pushing the birther movement is the equally laughable Orly Taitz. She is even proving nutty to the absolute nutters who are the birther movement

Fake protests shame America

August 4th 2009 02:41
Recipe - take one hot button issue, add professional lobbyists, spin doctors, and media blowhards, stir into a batch of ill-informed ditto-heads, and cook until boiling. What do you get? Tea parties! "Protests" against "socialized medicine!"

Or take a few dozen fundamentalists, tell them health care reform will mean hit squads going to retirement homes to off grandma, add some Hannitization, and bake until brain dead. Then mix together a slop made from fake statistics, lies about how horrible health care is in other countries, some Ann Coulter wisdom, and some Glenn Beck Cocoa Puffs, and pour into the empty head. Same result

It was a hot night in Portland, in more ways than one. A heat wave that crested in the 100s two days earlier was still in the high 90s, with some humidity. Weather suited more to Texas than Portland. And it was hot inside the Bagdad Theater! Two hours plus centered on a common theme, health care reform now.
