Autumn in America: Changing leaves, cooler days, and Al Qaeda

Ah, Autumn. A wonderful time of the year, when the summer heat fades, trees start to change, baseball enters the playoffs, and we need to be reminded of the bogeyman.
I do love the fall season, when the transition occurs from summer to winter. Although I am lucky enough to live in an area that doesn't suffer the oppressive heat and humidity that plagues many other areas, it still gets a little hot for my liking. The fall, on the other hand, is much more comfortable. And by mid October, the welcome relief of the first winter rains arrives. One other thing I have come to expect at the end of summer is saber rattling and fear mongering.
We even got an Osama Bin Ladin video this year. The last one came in October of 2004. Hmm...what was going on then? Oh yea...a very crucial mid-term election. That Osama guy didn't show his face during the fall of '06, and look what happened. Not saying that there is a tie-in, just sayin...
Of course, we get reminded pretty much weekly that we have be afraid - just not enough to quit shopping. It's just that it seems to step up abit when there is an important and/or historic decision to be made. Go figure.
And is anyone really trying to "get" Osama? I mean really, with the kind of commitment it would take to actually get it done? The boogeyman under the bed isn't quite as scary when we turn on the lights...or capture him. Don't get me wrong - Bin Ladin is a criminal and needs to be captured - my thinking is that we really need to have a leader that will do it, and not just talk about it. Not someone who likes to keep him in the background, pulling him out of the hat whenever he needs to rally the base.
Now we have an Osama video just in front of a sure to be heated argument about the so-called "surge" of American forces in Iraq. Funny, the videos never come after the big debate or election. Always just a few days before....again, not saying anything, just sayin...
