Bush holds rhetoric line with Iran, depite NIE
December 4th 2007 18:09
On day after a new national intelligence estimate (NIE) came out saying that Iran ended its nuclear program in 2003, Mr. Bush felt compelled to hold a press conference and spin the NIE to the context of his twisted views. In spite of the fact the he essentially had his drum taken from him by the American intelligence agencies and the NIE, Mr. Bush can't help himself. He knows the clock is ticking on his debacle of an Administration. He also knows that he is rolling the dice if he counts on the next president to push war. So he feels he has to act soon.
He spoke to the press this morning showing his trademark petulance and arrogance. Kieth Olbermann put it well when commenting earlier this year. Olbermann said Bush was "acting more and more like we interrupted him when he was watching his favorite cartoons on the DVR," and I agree. Bush seems driven more by rescuing some sort of "legacy" than anything else. Too bad he wants a legacy that would include a wrecked economy, further environmental degradation, larger wars, weakened government (FEMA, FDA, FAA, VA, etc) and a badly damaged American image abroad. He seems bent on making sure that the only people who benefit from his eight years in office are the super rich and the leaders of the religious right. His entire presidency is a "faith based initiative" and most of the world has lost faith.
"No, I'm feeling pretty spirited - pretty good about life" Bush said when asked if he was worried about a credibility gap. Mr. President, not all of us get our info from the Fox propaganda channel. You had no credibly yesterday, and you have none today with most Americans. He continued "I have said Iran is dangerous, and the NIE doesn't' do anything to change my opinion about the danger Iran poses to the world." Well, at least this time he didn't throw out the WWIII rhetoric.
Apparently Mr. Bush has seen fit to shift the paradigm about what constitutes an imminent threat. Now he holds that even having the knowledge to operate a program is reason enough for action to be taken against a regime of his choosing.
"I view this report as a warning signal that they had the program, they halted the program." The "decider" said. Huh? Were not we, and others in the international community who were concerned, trying to halt the program? Now we are supposed to be alarmed because our own intelligence services say they did just that?
"We know they had a program. We know they halted the program." Bush said in his opening remarks, responding to a question that also asked if the military option is now off the table. "All options are on the table." He said. The Crusades can go on!
The point everyone needs to take away is that he is getting it wrong again, and he doesn't care. He got it wrong on Iraq, Katrina, the economy, etc, etc, etc...and he is getting it wrong on Iran to push his own twisted agenda. In the mind -numbing logic of the Bush Administration, Bush says he didn't hear about the NIE until last week. Even though he admits to David Gregory that he was told in August that we had some "new information" about Iran. He then denies that the "new information" was elaborated on until last week. Is he that uninterested in world affairs?
Everyone in America, be they liberal or conservative, Democrats or Republicans, need to see this lying and incompetent manipulator for exactly what he is. He asks for the international community to work together. That's exactly what they should do, work together to ensure that he is not allowed to widen war for his own agenda.
