D. James Kennedy, right wing vangaurd, dies

The neo-conservative movement has had a rough year. George Bush and company are on the ropes. Jerry Falwell died earlier in the year. And now he is joined in passing by one of the biggest promoters of an American theocracy, D. James Kennedy. Kennedy founded a religious empire focused around the Coral Ridge Ministries based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He took it from a few dozen people to a genuine mega-church with worldwide reach and influence. He wasn't content to remain in the religious sphere, though. He constantly worked to bring a more theocratic theme to American government.
"Our job is to reclaim America for Christ, whatever the cost. As the vice regents of God, we are to exercise Godly dominion and influence over our neighborhoods, our schools, our government, our literature and arts, our sports arenas, our entertainment media, our news media, our scientific endeavors-in short, over every aspect and institution of human society."- D. James Kennedy said more than once.
The most prominent arm of what was really a christo-fascist organization was his Center for Reclaiming America for Christ. he advocated Dominionism, which says God granted Christians "Dominion" over every facet of life. The center had as stated goals the de facto assumption of all leadership roles in all social and government life in America, and then the world. Sound like too much? Just look at a transcript of one of his speeches sometime.
Kennedy also founded the Center for Christian Statesmanship, which organized Capitol Hill Bible studies and other events that attracted top government officials. He encouraged them "to embrace God's providential purpose for this nation." This group would hold meetings in Washington, D.C. that were designed to bring a very vitriolic world view into the halls of government.
D. James Kennedy literally founded and ran a religious empire, with millions of avid followers all over the world. He founded two schools and authored at least 50 books. His legacy will not fade from the "culture wars" anytime soon. It may well be that the election of 2006 put a hold on the forward movement of the theocracy types, as the Reclaiming America center closed earlier this year. With the death of two of the movements most charismatic leaders in Kennedy and Falwell, and the dire straits the Bush Administration finds itself in, and the scandals involving its representative members of Congress, democracy in America can take a breath. But she still had better not let down her guard.
