Dragging Conservatives, kicking and screaming, into the future.
August 8th 2008 00:07
Like children who don't understand it's for their own good to be dragged out of the toy section at the Wal-Mart, conservatives are kicking and screaming and making it harder for Americans to move ahead on so many important fronts. They don't like all kinds of important ideas, like fighting global warming and finally putting an end to the Iraq occupation. They can't see the glaringly obvious need to move rapidly away from oil in whatever area we can. They are entrenched in very bad ideas with bad consequences for everyone.
If the stakes weren't so high, we wouldn't have to act so boldly. But inaction on the important fronts are very much endangering far more than just opinions. The very future of our planet is at stake. Now that's not like a Christian end-time thing. The planet will go on. Humans will go on. But what kind of world will it be? How many millions will have to die?
It's not the first time conservatives will have to be grabbed by the proverbial collar and dragged to the future, and it probably won't be the last. A good comparison is what FDR had to do to end the Great Depression and bring about the New Deal. Fact is, we need another New Deal. We need to repair the damage done by years of conservative rule, and move ahead with greater social reforms. We need universal health care for all Americans. We need affordable education, thought the university level. We need a society that cares for those at the bottom as much as it cares for those who have celebrity names.
On energy, we need to consider energy supplies as a national security issue in that being so dependent on oil endangers our national security. Drilling everywhere we can is not the answer. Oil is a limited resource, and becoming more so every day. Oil has already passed the peak of production and to deny so is to ignore the obvious. There are so many uses for oil beyond driving - air travel, plastics, construction materials, on and on. A wise "conservative" would want to conserve what we have for those needs in the future.
For transportation we need all those things conservatives love to hate. Public transit, more stringent fuel economy, tax credits for electric cars, windfall profits taxes, solar and wind power. Why do conservatives so love to make fun of solar and wind, anyway? They claim that the technology is "decades away" even though we have had the technology for decades. The answer? Most conservatives just believe what their leaders tell them to believe. And those leaders have vested interests in seeing solar and wind not widely applied. Solar and wind, you see, are free after the initial investment. There's no money to be made from a blowing breeze or a sunny day. And the lemmings run headlong for the cliff.
It's important to know that there is a person who will shoot the last Polar Bear, cut down the last tree, and burn the last drop of oil. And of course, that person will go by the name "conservative." Those of us who know better have to once again take charge, and bring the future. Sure, they won't like it. But remember, it's for their own good. It's doubtful they will thank us for cleaner air, cheaper energy, less war - but we will be OK.
