George Bush blames teenagers for job losses

June 8th 2008 04:29
You know, as soon as I put this out I fully expect some dunder-headed neo-con to take up the same call, saying rising unemployment numbers last month were caused by teenagers seeking summer jobs. I know you are out there - so convinced that your man George can do no wrong that you will fall right in line with his idiotic logic that he wants to sell you.

It's important to remember that new job entrants go into the job market all the time. Without a level of growth not even the status quo will me maintained. If that level isn't met, you have job loss. If you stop your "logic" there, maybe you could, if you suspend reality enough, draw the same conclusion. Of course, there are too many problems with this line of reasoning to even consider it.

The unemployment numbers are already rigged to be lower than the actual levels. Unemployment figures are only reported for those listed with unemployment services and receiving benefits, or "jobless claims." Those whose claims have expired or who have suspended their job search aren't counted. Neither is anyone who has had to settle for less hours or lower pay. It's safe to assume the real rate to be substantially higher.

The real joke comes when Bush tries to blame teenagers entering the summer job market. If they are just entering, they can't be counted as unemployed. Even if they don't find a job all summer they won't be added to the number of unemployed as defined. The only way a teenager entering the summer job market could bring a rise to jobless calculations is if they forced another employee to get laid off so they could have that summer job. Nice try, Mr. Bush.

The Bush Administration continues to put out propaganda aimed at anyone dumb enough to buy it. The problem for them is that more people are waking up to just how badly they have been lied to and mislead. Stop listening, people. Deficit spending, bad fiscal policy, bad trade policy, bad energy policy - those are some of the real reasons for the bad job market. Of all the very bad qualities George Bush demonstrates on a regular basis, his absolute inability to recognize his mistakes is among the worst.

Hi Jeff, our former government did the same thing - rigged the numbers so that looked like there was a lower unemployment rate by counting anyone that had a part-time job of a few hours per week. It's all propaganda.

Yes it is, Cheryl...the real rate is much higher. Another trick they do here is not counting food and fuel in the consumer price index, which measures inflation. Hmmm..

It was one hour Cheryl. If you worked one hour a week you were considered employed. Hence our incredibly low unemployment under Howard's govt. What boggles my mind is how many people fell for it.

Jeff, glad to see George Bush is determined to remain the worst president ever to the very last minute of the very last day.

To a lot of people, unemployment figures are just numbers. The folks that really understand that number are the follks that make it up. That understanding goes deeper when the "under employed" is factored into the emotion, especially when is age, racial or sexual bias is involved. I do not consider anyone not working and not wanting to work or not trying to find work as unemployed and I am sure there are more than just two or three of those types included in the unemployment statistic.

I do not think Mr. Bush's problem is limited to his inability to admit his mistakes ... I think he actually believes he has not made mistakes. I also think that frame of mind fits many Washington politicians (and they are not all Republicans); but that is just an opinion and we know about opinions.

Mr. Bush will not go down in history as the worst president ever. That indicates someone will remember his presidency. I think he will join the list of presidents that no one remembers.

Damn Ruby, I thought it was around 4 hours which was bad enough, one hour - that's insane! I work a 25 hour week due to health reasons and I can barely survive. I don't think anything should be included in the employment figures if one can't actually live, however meagerly, off that wage. Otherwise it's pocket money. Stupid. Really stupid.

Yes he is, Ruby....and Rick, I do think he will be remembered as the worst - if for no other reason than we will be dealing with the fallout of his idiocy for years..

Bush is the worst president in American history. Bush facilitated the 9/11 attacks. Subsequently, Bush lied to Congress and the American people relative to the reasons for invading Iraq. Bush purposefully misled Congress and the American people. Then, Bush murdered more than 4,000 United States service members. And Bush wounded more than 30,000 United States service members. In torturing prisoners of war, Bush patently violated the Geneva Convention. Bush unlawfully wiretapped United States citizens. In using “signing statements” to challenge hundreds of laws passed by Congress, Bush violated the Constitution. Bush has ignored global warming. Bush is guilty of criminal negligence relative to the response to Hurricane Katrina. Bush disobeys our democratic values and Constitution. Bush is a disgrace to the United States.
