Hello and welcome

September 7th 2007 20:20
It's an interesting and challenging time for countries and societies around the world who are being confronted by the specter of religious fundamentalism. I think that it presents the greatest threat to the future. Theocracy has plagued humanity for all of recorded history, but many had thought it to be on the decline. On the contrary, it remains a true and constant danger to all the countries of the world.

While much has been written and said about the threats posed from Islamic fundamentalism, it isn't the sole concern by any means. Every bit as dangerous, Christian fundamentalism threatens to erase democratic principles - most notably in the United States. Christian fundamentalism has coupled with the ugly beast of uncontrolled capitalism and cronyism to push America to the brink of a quasi-dictatorship empowered by the fears, superstitions, and bigotry.

My position is that although religion does have adherents who don't support the agendas of the fundamentalists, it is the treating of religion as sound philosophy that gives the required power to fundamentalist movements. Still, I don't wish to bring an end to religion. Just to the ability religion has to form government policy and to either start or justify warfare.

Please join me, and feel free to add anything you would like, I welcome any and all discussions.

Jeff, I look forward to your viewpoints, as always. I will certainly add my thoughts from time to time, just to get my two cents in. As a Reform Jew, i am disgusted at the lack of knowledge Americans have with regard to their and others' beliefs and faiths. A couple of months ago, I opined on AC, Really Long Link

Anyway, the best of luck and prosperity!

Sounds interesting. I'm sure I'll be dropping by from time to time, though I might not always be able to relate with the political references and social nuances of America.

I have strong views on religion though, from my personal experiences with it in my own life, and I think we will be clashing and concurring with one another in the future!

I will certainly expect your two cents, Jim! And Michaelie, I look foward to it! I will try to be somewhat international in my scope, as I think it is an international problem. I do think that America needs to be a focus of discussions as we have a president who holds dominionist Christian views. Thanks for stopping by!

Sure, fundamentalist groups are passionate in their contentions of truth and get angry at any opposition to what they claim to be absolute in the name of their gods. But this is just religion. In reality, truth doesn't need any advocates to support it, having its own standing, authority and power. This is evidenced in the inevitable undesirable consequences of trying to act against it. So, let's spread the idea it's better not to get involved in religious fervour about truth. And when looking for what's true - ignore feelings, personal relationships, experiences and anything else that stands for self. Because truth isn't individualist. It's absolute.

Exactly, Big Cat...real truth is indeed absolute. What is dangerous is when the "truth" as one sees it, no matter how faulty it really is, is taken as absolute truth. Then, it becomes OK to persecute and kill. That's the danger.
