Pat Buchanan says "the cusp of new liberal era"

November 5th 2008 02:39
At just a little after 4 p.m. West Coast time, Pat Buchanan made a statement that could well prove to be the call of the night. He said we could be on the "cusp of a new liberal era" here in America. He compared the 2008 election to that of 1932, which brought Franklin Roosevelt to the presidency. There are alot of parallels, for sure. The economy is in turmoil, and we have a Republican Party very ill-equipped to deal with it. In fact, most Americans now realize the conservative movement caused a great deal of the turmoil.

Also, we have a Democratic candidate who has energized the country like no one in decades. Not all of the energy has been in support, of course - but it has been palpable and electric. Barack Obama may well prove to be the next Roosevelt, guiding the country to a more progressive and democratic future from the ashes of the Bush presidency - just as Roosevelt did after Hoover.

Barack Obama may be more of a centrist than Roosevelt, at least in appearance. But remember, Roosevelt was alot more conservative at the beginning of his presidency. He moved more to the left as time went on. And although he was a "war-time" president, he was hardly a war profiteer. Of course Roosevelt was far from perfect. The internment of Japanese Americans is a stain on American history. But he did take America from the depths of a deep depression to the economic powerhouse it became.

There are some major differences between the economic turmoil of that time and now. For one, the country wasn't in debt. On the flip side, the firewalls and safety nets we have today weren't in place. The FDIC and Social Security, for example, didn't exist. So while there is less this economic downturn has more potential for fall, the risk total destitution for millions of Americans is less.

But back to the election. As I write Ohio was just called for Obama. Could prove to be the cinch. While it appears the Blue Tsunami I had hoped for may only be a large wave, Congress should be handedly in Democratic hands and the presidency going to Obama we can expect the country to finally move forward in a progressive way. Yes, Pat Buchanan, it is the "cusp of a new liberal era."
