Newt Gingrich offers award to porn company, then takes it back

Ah, Newt - you do have a knack for getting egg on your face, don't you? Sure, you were having an affair when you were so vociferously condemning President Clinton over Monica Lewinsky. Sure, you act like a champion of the people when you were the leader of one of the most corrupt batch of legislators Congress has ever seen. And now, one of the most visible symbols of right wing radicalism and hypocrisy does it again.
Think Progress (www.thinkprogress.org) has obtained a fax sent to one Allison Vivas of a company called Pink Visual. It came from Newt Gingrich's American Solutions for for Winning the Future group (ASWF) and it said she had been chosen for a 2009 Entrepreneur of the Year Award.
From the letter received by Vivas, as reported on Think Progress:
"Newt would like to arrange a private dinner with you at the historic Capitol Hill Club on the evening of October 7, 2009 in Washington. You'll dine privately with Newt at this exclusive venue and he'll take the occasion to present you with your well deserved reward and have your photo taken together. As an award winner, you'll be on the ground floor as Newt and his council begin the work to turn this country around....Newt is looking forward to hearing your ideas on getting the economy moving again and getting your feedback on his plans over dinner.
This tremendous honor is a testament to your success in building your business and recognition of the risks you take to stimulate the economy."
Apparently, the way Vivas and Pink Visual "stimulate" the economy didn't fit well with image Newt Gingrich was looking for. You see, Pink Visual is a porn DVD superstore, and Allison Vivas is a former porn star. The "honor" of having dinner with Newt Gingrich has been withdrawn.
An ASWF representative called Vivas and said the fax was sent to her "inadvertently." As a spokesperson for Pink Visual said, "We're not entirely clear on how one 'inadvertently' sends a fax to the right person at the correct fax number." Puzzling, eh? The fax also included a view of the certificate to be given, with her name displayed. Inadvertent?
You might think Gingrich and company would consider doing the right thing in light of their own inability to do research, and present the award as promised. Of course, one wouldn't hold anything against Vivas if she refused it. But at least Newt should stick by what he has promised. Who am I kidding? This is Newt Gingrich we are talking about!
