President Bush again stonewalls press

October 17th 2007 16:18
The Chimp in Chief holds a news coference where there is nothing new, nothing to report, no questions answered, and continued stonewalling of reporters. Why did he hold a news conference? To apply pressure on Republicans in Congress ahead of the veto override vote coming up on Thursday, and to through a little of his swagger around. That was the headline he wanted, that Congress isn't sending him bills that he can sign. He is trying to stay relevant while also firing up the base.

How anyone can look at him at not gag is beyond me. As the time went on, he kept getting some real questions and he kept dodging them, a different headline might have emerged. Along the lines of firing up the base, he threw out WWIII talk around Iran and possible tensions with North Korea and Russia. Tensions almost entirely created by Mr. Bush, by the way. And he again refused to speak at all about Israel striking Syria. All of this is code for the evangelical base who thrills at the possibility of an apocalypse. Around a third of Americans imagines that they are living in the "end times" and will see the return of Christ - and the joyful genocide they expect to accompany him - during their lifetimes. When an end-times Dominionist talks they are often ignored. This one (Mr. Bush) needs to be listened to, as he has quite abit of military power at his disposal.

With the upcoming challenge to his fourth veto coming, the CIC felt the need to come out and remind us to be afraid, remind us that he is our daddy (something the evangelical base needs) and to mock Congress for challenging his lordship. What he is doing is setting up his own party for failure in 2008. Every Republican that votes to uphold his veto will have to answer to voters and parents back in their home districts. With you throw in the other ways they have fallen into lockstep with him (and some Democrats too) it should prove to be a challenging time for those who support his failed "leadership." Of course that depends on Americans actually getting out and voting. Hopefully they will in record numbers.
