"Seeking logical Republicans" In America?
March 10th 2009 00:36
Republican comments of late seem to be nothing but throwbacks to the same failed policy. It seems those on the conservative side of the American political scene are floundering about, looking for a new leader to follow. Republicans don't do seem to do well without a figurehead. The authoritarian mind tends to wander when not directed.
Of course there are voices to fill the leadership void, Rush Limbaugh being the "biggest." Others just as shrill rant on about Obama the communist and America's "radical" turn left. I suppose it's too much to ask that they acknowledge the country is firmly behind the policies and priorities President Obama has laid out. Never mind that a big majority of Americans now recognize most conservative voices as obstructionist and counter-productive.
In light of the conservative mindset, it did strike me as different when I read the words "looking for logical Republicans." Sounds like something you might need Indiana Jones to find. Now, sure there are people who identify themselves as Republicans who are logical. Their movement as a whole, on the other hand, is anything but. The conservative movement in America today is a basket-case.
Unwilling to give up bad ideas or to embrace good ones, unwilling to compromise for the good of America and the world, unwilling to even consider that the last Administration should be investigated. Unwilling to think outside of the box built by their mouthpieces and their god-heads. It might be sad, if it wasn't so laughable.
What does a person so steeped in bad ideology do when their ideals are so discredited as to become the stuff of late-night comedy routines? Grumble, of course! And try their absolute best to obstruct anything the enemy (read liberals, progressives, the working class, etc) from making any progress.
It's really appropriate for the Republican mascot to be the elephant. For like the elephant, Republicans are slow to change course, trample over anything in their way, and "never forget." They won't forget what it was like to have the reigns of power for decades, save a brief respite here and there. They won't forget what it was like to be able to muster the power of millions of minions to shower the powerful with money. They won't forget the corporate heyday of yesteryear. And they want all of it back, in spades.
Of course there is nothing wrong with substantial political opposition. In fact and practice it can be a good thing. What the Republicans are being today is nothing of the sort. They are much more like a concrete roadblock placed in the middle of a busy lane, forcing everyone to go around them to make forward progress. And go around them we will, thank you very much.
