The Hating of Hillary Clinton, what is behind it?

September 21st 2007 03:43
If you listen to right wing talk radio-hopefully only for research and/or laughs, like I do-you will hear rising above the normally mind-numbing banter a visceral hatred for Hillary Clinton. And it manifests itself in other places too. Evangelical harpies like Janet Parshall, Pat Robertson, D. James Kennedy and Dobson can't seem to squeeze in enough hate Hillary time in. Blogs and online articles spew hatred about her and Bill.

What is interesting is how little of what you hear and read actually has to do with her policies. Oh sure, once in awhile they will rant about how she is a socialist because she wants national health care. They don't acknowledge that so does a good majority of America. Leave that little part out, don't you know. Most of the time, all they do is attack her for how she looks or that she is a woman or that she is still married to Bill or that she isn't from New York or something equally not important to the national debate. And the tone of the attacks seems to almost come from a guttural level.

Now don't get me wrong, I am not saying public figures can't be attacked. I rail on President Bush on a regular basis. The difference is I can look at his policies and what he is doing to America and the world and give you a hundred reasons why he isn't qualified to be anywhere near the White House unless it is as a groudskeeper. Even then, I wouldn't trust him with power tools. While I will say he is an idiot and a bully and a coward, I can look to specific reasons why I have that position. And I don't attack his gender or his personal life.

If you read the articles about Hillary Clinton, you can't find much substance. Other than health care, about all they are saying is that she has changed her position on the Iraq debacle. In case you haven't paid attention, so have about half of all Americans. Less than a third opposed it outright at the start. Three quarters are against it now. And those in Congress that voted in favor of it had manipulated intelligence and the full power of a President right after an attack on America working against them. So I don't fault anyone for changing their mind. I do fault those who blindly stick by our current leader in spite of everything we now know.

So why do they hate her so? Some hate her because she is a woman seeking power. Some because she is a smart woman seeking power. Some because she is a smart liberal woman seeking power. She really isn't as liberal as I would like, but some see her as a liberal "radical." Some hate her because she is a Clinton. And they can't bring themselves to acknowledge that the only successful Presidency in decades was the Clinton's. Some hate her because Limbaugh and Hannity and Parshall tell them to. And I think some hate her because they know she very well may represent the future. A Democratic President, House, and Senate. The ones who rant about her all the time should be happy, they just might have years of being able to bloviate.

Thank you, Jeff, for pointing out the obvious. The Right hated Bill Clinton for reasons that mystify anyone rational. The Right prevented much of that which Clinton wanted to accomplish -- although his personal lapses gave them ammunition-- and yet he still had the most successful administration in a generation. No war, balanced budget, a controlling of welfare, a stable economy, etc.

Now the attention of the haters is directed toward Senator Clinton. Can an y of the Right state specifically why she is held to such scorn? No, all we get is cutesy terms, "Billlary" and such. And I am accused of name-calling!
