The obscenity of the Bush budget
February 3rd 2008 19:47
If anyone expected President Bush to do anything but stick to his same misguided and pathetic leadership style in his final year, they are far too optimistic. The worst president in American history seems as determined as ever to lock that legacy in stone. For the latest example look at his proposals for the fiscal 2009. And tell me, if you can, how this can be good for anyone in America? Well, except for his corporate crones, that is.
First, he proposes cutting Health and Human Services by 2B, or about 3 percent. The department is already under-funded under Bush. In the same budget he wants to add 35B to the defense budget, an increase of near 7 percent. And he still wants to omit most of the Iraq and Afghanistan spending from the budget, leaving it out of his projected 400B deficit. What the hell? But that's just part of the obscenity that is his budget proposal.
In probably the biggest example of the twisted and maniacal thinking of Mr, Bush, he proposes adding 21B to the Energy Department budget for nuclear weapons programs. Like we don't have enough of the damn things. Like we need to try to goad the Russians into another arms race. Wait a minute, would the president actually wish for an arms race, you ask? Damn skippy he would.
His budget projects a deficit of 400B. That number is likely to be much higher as the economic slowdown builds and revenues fall. And still the idiot thinks tax cuts to the rich are the best thing for the economy. His budgetary policies have brought this downturn upon us, and his lack of recognition will make it deeper than it needs to be.
He proposes 200B in cuts to Medicare and Medicaid over 5 years, further weakening the programs, just as more Americans will be needing them. Sure, Mr. Bush, your self-righteous mother won't need them, but millions of Americans will. And a damn sight more than they will need more nukes, I'm sure.
He wants to essentially freeze all domestic programs, including medical research. He will and his drone-like supporters will likely say "we can't afford the programs." Never mentioning that it is precisely because of his lunatic policies that the budget is in shortfall. Of course, he doesn't see the budget as being too slim to cover tax giveaways to the wealthy.
Here are a couple of specifics for you. In HHS, Bush wants to eliminate a 302M program that gives grants to children's hospitals that help with medical education. Another 300M program for public health improvement projects would be eliminated, and he would cut the program that gives grants to help provide health care in rural areas by 87 percent. Rural areas have been bastions of Bush support, and this is the respect he shows for their health.
If anyone still needs convincing that Bush cares nothing for the American people beyond his rich cronies, they are probably beyond the reach of logic. Every American should be outraged, and should pressure Congress to once again reject his mean-spirited cuts. They were successful last year in staving many of them off, but will need the support of the people to do so again.
