The sham of "trickle down" economics
November 4th 2007 20:09
Although put forth as an economic ideal before him, the catch phrase "trickle down" is most attributed to the icon of the modern conservative movement, Ronald Reagan. Many things have been said about the debunked, but still clung to, "trickle down" economic model. I equate it to a multi-story outhouse. And if you're not in the top 5 percent, you end up all wet. The "toppers" get to set up in the penthouse of our economic outhouse, safe and secure, passing down everything that we know "rolls downhill." Just under them are the wanna-be toppers, those who are sucking the teat of corporate welfare, gorging at the trough of Ayn Rand style excess, and swilling the brew made from the sweat of the brow of the working class. They only get wet a little, when the toppers decide to "trickle down."
Below them, in the big room, are the rest of us. You know, those who don't "make" their money from dividend checks and CEO balloon payments and inherited largess. The ones who didn't get the big tax cut. The ones who know our children will be footing the bill for the huge tax cuts those in the floors above us got. Those of us who get to slop around in the shit cast down from above, so to speak. "Trickle down," indeed!
Mr. Bush, being one of the very few who still cling to the misguided notion that feeding the rich feeds the working class, has oft trumpeted how his tax cuts have created jobs. For each job created, there was roughly 550,000 dollars in tax cuts to the very wealthy. I don't know about you, but as a small business man myself, I can provide more than one job for 550,000 dollars. Here's an idea, Mr. President - how about hiring 10 guys for 50 grand each and having them work on rebuilding the crumbling infrastructure around the country? And hey, I even figured in 50 grand in savings for you to pay down the debt..What a plan. Instead of giving big bucks to those who really, really don't need anymore money, we could provide family wage jobs to 10 Americans. Not the mention the side benefit, getting crumbling infrastructure repaired! Oh yea, that would be the dreaded evil government doing something. Job creation worked really well in the past, and we got things like an interstate highway system and power grids out of the deal. With the neo-conservative economic plan, we get heiresses with more party money.
The gap between rich and poor is greater in America than any other developed country, and it is growing at a faster pace than ever under Mr. Bush and cronies. I don't disparage anyone the chance to make more money for more work. I can't understand why a CEO must make 800 times what his workers make, though. It has been my experience observing corporate America that you work harder up to lower and middle management, after that the jobs get easier fast.
"Trickle down" economic theory is the biggest sham sold the American people since prohibition. It didn't work, it won't work, and most of those who put it in place knew at the time that it wouldn't work. They just had to sell it. And like Prohibition, they used the Puritanistic side of American self-proclaimed "moral majorities" to shove it down the throat of the working class.
America - stop voting against your own self interests! Don't wait until crass capitalism run amok has driven us to another great depression. There isn't a single reason to vote for any candidate who tells you giving vast sums to the rich while running huge deficits will do anything positive at all. I could run my family economy the same way, living it up on borrowed money. But I'm smart enough to know that rooster comes home. Shouldn't we expect at least that level of economic acumen from our leaders?
